POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT
Henderson uses positive behavioural support which is a person centred approach that combines science with ethical values, to transform the lives of children and young adults with autism and mental health problems. At Henderson we strive to equip the children and young adults with the tools to achieve positive change by building capable environments to increased their resilience, when they encounter difficult situations.
At Henderson we do not solely focus on the elimination of challenging behaviours as we recognise that often with psychological approaches only the symptoms of mental health problems are treated as opposed to the cause. We pride ourselves on working to identify and understand the underlying causes of behaviours of concern, to provide tailored support for individuals according to the function of their behaviour.
The innovative use of positive behavioural support means that we are able to enhance the quality of life of children and young people, which reduces the likelihood of challenging behaviours occurring.
At Henderson, we focus on teaching skills development to help young people to become more independent in their daily lives and improve their quality of life .We also focus on being proactive so that reactive strategies such as distraction and grounding techniques are used before challenging behaviours occur, to minimise the use of restrictive interventions.
In addition, we work closely with a network of local authorities, schools, health professionals and social workers to improve the health and wellbeing for children and young people.By targeting areas that need extra support and using the expertise from the support network to tailor a support plan for individuals, which is reviewed regularly.
The families of individuals are invited to learn about and actively participate in the implementation of PBS techniques for children and young adults.Collaboration between the PBS Lead and the families of the young people is encouraged, to build the most supportive environment.
Our Impact
We have described the effectiveness of positive behavioural support as a framework and our passion for its implementation into daily practice to enhance the quality of life of children and young adults, but we understand that ultimately it is the words of those we support and the professionals that work with us that can convey the impact of the use of positive behavioural support techniques.
